What is Dwelling Coverage?
Dwelling Coverage is arguably the most important piece of your Homeowner’s insurance. It is commonly called “Coverage A” and refers to the actual structure of your home and all that entails. It does not apply to renters but is essential for homeowners.
What does it cover?
Dwelling Insurance is literally the nuts and bolts part of your policy. The foundation of your home, framing, built-in appliances, and those things attached to the structure are all included. This means that your attached garage, porch, and deck are covered.
What doesn’t it cover?
Anything detached from your home probably isn’t included in your dwelling coverage. Your shed, detached garage, pool, and fences need to be accounted for in other parts of your Homeowners insurance policy.
When does it apply?
Dwelling Coverage comes into effect when there is damage to your home due to fire or wind, even vandalism. Each policy is different, but typically dwelling coverage doesn’t apply to natural disasters like floods or earthquakes, those instances need to be covered under a different part of your policy.
When should I update my existing dwelling coverage?
Anytime you remodel your home, build an add-on, or purchase new built-in appliances it is worth looking at updating your coverage. Since this aspect of your Homeowners Insurance covers the nuts and bolts it’s also worth considering the rising price of building materials and how much your home would cost to repair or rebuild by square foot.
Dwelling coverage is only one part of your policy, but it is important to make sure that the deductible and coverage limit are both comparable to what you are insuring.
